Looking at Life in Smoke Rise, Georgia

A Personal Connection

The other day, a former neighbor from Decatur texted to say she and her family were exploring a move to Smoke Rise. She asked for my opinions on the area and that got me thinking about what it is that makes this area special.

I’ve lived in Smoke Rise since March of 2019. I moved to the area first and foremost because of the house we found and not because of anything about the area. In fact, I didn’t know a thing about Smoke Rise at that time.

What I can say today is that Smoke Rise is exactly what you make it. It's big enough not to be stifling, but small enough that I see my neighbors at the grocery store.

It's not flashy, but some of the houses are amazing. The area has a welcoming, steady character that grows on you over time.

First of all, navigating the area is interesting. I believe we spent the first two years learning the layout of all of the different neighborhoods that are within Smoke Rise. Actually, to be fair, I don't know if I've even been down all the streets due to the fact that they are winding and often dead ends. And the names of the roads. Don't get me started.

I'm not a map maker and of course you can look this up on Google, but I do like my version. It's a picture of where Smoke Rise is situated between Tucker and Stone Mountain, Georgia.

I made a list of the places that get me most confused.

  • Antelope Drive and Antebellum Road are fairly near each other

  • Lots of roads with different designations, like Rosser Road and Rosser Place, Oxbow Road and Oxbow Circle, Forest Glade Court, Forest Glade Drive, and Forest Glade Circle or Kanawha Drive, Kanawha Court or Kanawha Bluff

  • Then names like Fawn Ridge and Pheasant Run

  • And then there are a bunch of American Revolution style names... like Redcoat Run and Musket Lane

My favorite way to explore is via electric bike.

These are the numbers taken from US News & World report and shown as bullets: Number of Homes: ~2,000; Number of Residents: ~4,000; Median Sale Price: ~$480,000 - $675,000; Amenities: Smoke Rise Country Club, multiple community pools, tennis courts, pickleball courts; Schools: Served by the DeKalb County School District, including Smoke Rise Elementary, which typically performs at or above state averages in reading.

I’ll hear someone say “I live in The Forest,” and I need clarification. I still haven't figured out where that is. It was only this year that I discovered that there was a Smoke Rise community located up Old Tucker Road on the way to Rockbridge Road. I learned about that one when someone I know moved there.

A Bit About the Smoke Rise Vibe

One of the first things people notice about Smoke Rise are the trees.

Homes sit on lots that are an acre or more. Since the houses were mainly built in the late 1960s, they are surrounded by mature trees (unless they’ve been felled in a storm – more on that later). This all works to create a sense of privacy and calm. Smoke Rise feels established in the best way—like it’s had time to grow into itself.

This isn’t a neighborhood of identical houses lined up in neat rows. Instead, you’ll find a mix of architectural styles and layouts, each with its own personality. That variety gives Smoke Rise a lived-in, collected feel rather than something overly planned or uniform.

Since most people have connected garages, you may not encounter your neighbors often. However, some of us have established a nice community of connection that includes dog walks, jogs, and potluck dinners. You’ll always get a wave from a walker when you drive on your street. It’s quiet and relaxed, which matches the woody vibe of the area.

At the same time, the location is incredibly convenient. Smoke Rise sits close to Tucker, Stone Mountain, and Decatur, making it easy to get to some lovely restaurants, shops, and major commuting routes. Yet I always feel like I’m coming home to a peaceful natural setting.

Garden Club and Neighborhood Activities

The best window into the heart of Smoke Rise is through the community groups. The Smoke Rise Garden Club is a standout example and one I just happen to be a member of. It brings together residents who share an interest in gardening, but more importantly, it creates a space where people can learn from each other and connect.

What’s refreshing is that it’s not just for experts. You’ll find people at every stage—from those just figuring out what grows in Georgia soil to those with years of experience. There’s a strong sense of curiosity and generosity, where knowledge gets shared freely and conversations flow easily.

Beyond the garden club, there are neighborhood events, seasonal gatherings, and informal meetups that keep the community engaged. These aren’t over-the-top productions—they’re approachable, neighborly, and easy to join. Anyone considering a move to Smoke Rise should feel comfortable joining in or even starting their own sub-community.

Why People Love Living in Smoke Rise

Talk to people who live in Smoke Rise, and you’ll find out they’ve been in their homes for years. Recently, it feels like there is a lot of new folks moving to the neighborhood however. What used to be considered OTP is now more appreciated thanks to the trees, the lot sizes, the sense of space.

Another draw is the balance Smoke Rise offers. It feels tucked away, almost like a retreat, but you’re not cut off from the rest of metro Atlanta. You can spend your day in the city and come home to something quieter and more grounded.

For many people, that combination—space, character, and connection—is hard to find elsewhere.

What We Complain About

Power outages. Most folks have invested in a generator because it's fairly common to lose power and sometimes it is out for a day or more. That's because when trees fall in our area, they take power lines down too. A big storm means I'm praying I don't die in my bed with a branch through my heart. And I'm only partially kidding.

Real Estate Trends and Home Values

From a real estate perspective, Smoke Rise continues to attract buyers who are looking for something a little different from newer, more densely built neighborhoods. The larger lots, mature trees, established landscaping, and unique home styles are a big part of that appeal.

Homes here often offer more square footage and outdoor space compared to newer construction in similar price ranges, which can make them especially attractive to buyers who value both indoor and outdoor living. The layouts are conducive to multigenerational living.

Demand for neighborhoods like Smoke Rise has remained steady, particularly among buyers who prioritize character and long-term livability. Well-maintained homes—and especially those with thoughtful updates—tend to stand out and perform well when they come on the market.

As with any area, prices and market conditions can shift over time, but Smoke Rise has shown a consistent ability to hold its value. For buyers, it offers a chance to invest in a neighborhood with a strong identity. For sellers, it provides an opportunity to highlight features that are increasingly hard to find: space, individuality, and a true sense of place.
